Question

Module 1 Discussion: Divisions of Psychology

Description:

Many people think of psychologists only as therapists, and it's true that the fields of clinical and counseling psychology do make up the largest specialty areas. However, many psychologists have no connection with therapy. Instead, they work as researchers, teachers, or consultants in academic, business, industry, and government settings, or in a combination of settings (e.g., Roediger, 2017; Silvia et al., 2017; Sternberg, 2017).

Instructions:

Step 1: Investigate.

The American Psychological Association (APA) is currently made up of 54 different divisions. Visit the APA's website to explore the divisions: https://www.apa.org/about/division/Links to an external site..

Step 2: Discuss.

  • Select two divisions of psychology you find to be most interesting and address the following in your post:
    • Identify the names of the two divisions you selected
    • Provide a brief description of each division based on what you've learned
    • Discuss why you find these divisions to be of interest
    • Describe how these divisions contribute to the field of psychology and our understanding of the brain and human behavior
  • If you were in charge of creating a new division, what would it be and why?

Step 3: Respond.

Read other students' posts and respond to at least two other students. Incorporate personal experience, if appropriate, to help support or debate other students' posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues and provide examples to support opinions.

In your responses to your peers’ posts, be concrete, make suggestions for change, including strategies, movements, obstacles, and so forth. Outside-the-box thinking and debate are encouraged.

The use of outside resources (your textbook or other academic source) is required. Be sure to cite any outside sources in current APA format.

Due Date:

  • Initial posts must be submitted by due date. Subsequent replies are due by the end of the week (see Course Policies and Procedures or your Instructor for details).

Grading:

  • Be certain to review the rubric to ensure that you are fulfilling the requirements.
