Module 4 Discussion: Operant Conditioning, PSYC 1310, Concorde College

Question

Module 4 Discussion: Operant Conditioning

Description:

"Classical and operant conditioning are both known as associative learning. As the name implies, they occur when an organism makes a connection, or association, between two events. During classical conditioning, an association is made between two stimuli, whereas in operant conditioning the association is made between a response and its consequences. operant conditioning is based on what happens after we voluntarily perform a behavior (McSweeney & Murphy, 2017; Pear, 2016). We do something and learn from the consequences. If a behavior is followed by reinforcement, it increases. If it's followed by punishment, it decreases. The key point to remember is that consequences are the heart of operant conditioning" (Huffman, Dowdell, & Sanderson, 2018, p. 195).

Instructions:

Step 1: Respond to the following prompt:

  • You observe a parent yelling “No!” to a child who is screaming for candy in a supermarket. Given what you've learned about operant conditioning, can you predict how both the parent and the child will respond in similar future situations?
  • What would be a better alternative to yelling "No!"? Identify the type of reinforcement(s) you would use to shape both the child's and parent's responses to create a better outcome.

Step 2: Read other students' posts and respond to at least two other students. Incorporate personal experience, if appropriate, to help support or debate other students' posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues and provide examples to support opinions.

In your responses to your peers’ posts, be concrete, make suggestions for change, including strategies, movements, obstacles, and so forth. Outside-the-box thinking and debate is encouraged.

The use of outside resources (your textbook or other academic source) is required. Be sure to cite any outside sources in current APA format.

Due Date:

  • Initial posts must be submitted by due date. Subsequent replies are due by the end of the week (see Course Policies and Procedures or your Instructor for details).

Grading:

  • Be certain to review the rubric to ensure that you are fulfilling the requirements.
