As you review this article and the others that I have posted, I'd like you to write about your thoughts on organizational politics and how you see yourself in this arena.
I've included several articles and can't stress the importance of being "politically savvy." Higher education is just as political as corporate America. I've taught in private as well as public high schools, although most of my time has been in California Community Colleges, I did teach in New York, New Jersey, and Colorado, so I am confident that I've experienced a lot of organizational politics both as a teacher and a union leader. I observe it, take part in it, and want to encourage you all to evaluate yourselves with the various quizzes/assessments I provided.
What is your plan? I had no plan when I started teaching at 22. I naively thought I'd get ahead by working hard......but I got laid off a lot in my 20s. It was very pollitical.....I always got another job, but I was very much an observer and watched. I listened, and I read everything I could find out politics at work,
So, I'd like you to reflect and write your own plan. What do you think your style is? How do you see yourself as a leader within the environment (medicine, law, education, technology), or whatever other profession you choose?
What tools do you need to succeed? Write this as if you are presenting a group of new student leaders or new organizational leaders.
