Module 9 – Discussion, PS 475 ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS & POLICY

Question

Module 9 - Discussion

Few environmental conflicts have reached the level of complexity and emotion as the management of the Klamath River basin. This Pacific Northwest “Water War” ties together established agricultural and coastal fishing communities, urban power needs, tribal rights and culture, protected endangered species, and feuding government agencies. In 2015, the water agreement fell apart. (Klamath Basin: Water pact crumbles in Congress after years of work (Links to an external site.))

However, in April 2016, a new agreement was offered that provided relief to farmers dependent on water, removed dams to restore salmon habitat for environmental interests, and addresses the concerns and rights of tribes, fed agencies, and citizens ( Revived Klamath dam removal deal adds offer of money for farmers (Links to an external site.) )

After reviewing these articles, what are your thoughts about the proposed Klamath pact of 2016? Do you feel it is an equitable solution? Is one party getting too much accommodation? Considering this pact has been in the making since the early 2000s, discuss the inherent complexities of environmental policy-making (social, economic, cultural, political). Cite your sources! Newer sources are also appreciated (Spoiler alert: the conflict is still ongoing).
