Module 3 – Discussion, PS 475 ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS & POLICY

Question

Module 3 - Discussion

The environmental justice movement merges the civil rights movement with concern for environmental protection by promoting the idea that no community should bear a disproportionate burden of environmental harms due to race, ethnic origin, or economic status. In 1994, President Bill Clinton signed an executive order mandating federal agencies identify and address issues of environmental justice within their work, and since then environmental justice has become a common theme in discussions of environmental policy.

View the following videos (there are several, but they are all short clips--don't worry!). Were you aware of the environmental justice movement before viewing these videos? The environmental movement is sometimes criticized for its lack of diversity and attention to the concerns of diverse populations. Is this fair? Can we prevent the unequal distribution of environmental harm and environmental protection? What strategies and tactics might be most helpful for the environmental justice movement to pursue in reaching their goals?
