Final assignment - Arts in Africa, AFS 3610, Interdisciplinary perspectives on foreign culture

Question

In Modules 13 & 14, review the article, Amid Black Lives Matter Protests, Is It Time to Repatriate Africa’s Looted Art? Black Lives Matter protesters, African Americans in particular and other diasporan Africans are generating a re-examination of European colonial exploitation and joining African voices to push for change and “decolonize the museums” in Europe.

Modules 13 and 14 also share two elaborate Benin art exhibitions, (Western reactions to Benin Bronzes and Exhibiting the Benin bronzes) presented in England and France, two primary colonial countries of Europe.

From your study of colonialism in Africa and reflecting on Keim and Somerville’s chapters 1, 2 & 3 on stereotypes and myths, in no less than three (3) pages, please answer questions a & b below:

  1. What is the author of the article, Gbadamosi trying to convey to the readers about the European perceptions and portrayals of Africa as the Dark Continent, yet, its priceless artifacts and art pieces have been hoarded in European countries (Britain, France, Germany, Belgium) and denied restitution to the continent?
  2. Restitution or repatriation of the art objects is defended and denied by Europeans because of several reasons. What are they and do you agree or disagree? What is your stand or what are your recommendations on this subject?
