Africa is almost certainly one area of the world about which most Americans know the least. It is characterized by complexity and diversity and with that, stereotypes and distortions. In

your essay, share a negative and a positive stereotype about Africa before you started this course. Then, read Keim and Somerville (chapters 1 and 2) and reflect on their convictions with the common application of the word ‘stereotype’. Additionally, listen to a TED talk by the Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie, The dangers of a single story, (See video in Modules). Following your readings and listening, show how and why stereotypes exist and the lessons the authors share in an attempt to correct stereotypes. Apply pertinent quotations from the chapters and video to buttress your arguments.
