While recent attention has been paid to the growing number of female Heads of State, Caribbean
women’s representation in politics remains low. Moreover, the most significant increases in
women’s electoral representation have occurred in the past 25 years. Recognizing that women’s
underrepresentation is a problem for democracy, policy, and the political process; you are tasked
with selecting and highlighting the achievements and experiences of one Caribbean female Head
of State.
Think about the institution of politics with a gender lens. Write a profile of a current or former
Caribbean female Head of State. Engage in a discussion about her personal and professional story,
her experience and whether being a woman made a difference in her path to office, her experience
in office, and the impact she made once there.
A profile is a special kind of research project:
You will need to conduct library research to gather information about the history of the person you
have selected so that you have an informed and factually accurate profile.
Magazines and newspapers are filled with profiles. Unlike conventional news stories, which
report current events, profiles tell about people and activities. Some profiles take us behind the
scenes giving us a glimpse of the person’s inner circles. Others probe the social, political, and
moral contributions of the person.
Profiles share many features with autobiography, such as narrative, anecdote, description, and
dialogue. Yet profiles differ significantly from autobiography. Whereas an autobiography
reflects on a remembered personal experience, a profile synthesizes and presents newly acquired
information.
In writing your profile, you will practice the research methods of archival data collection, review
of interviews, content analysis, notetaking, commonly used by social scientists. In the end, you
will analyze and synthesize the information you have collected, to present your profile.

• Is based on information gathered from in-depth and accurate research.
• Take readers behind the scenes of the person you are featuring.
• Provide information while at the same time engage and arousing the readers’ curiosity.

• Include at least three quotes by the featured figure.
• Reveals an attitude toward your subjects and offer—implicitly or explicitly—an
interpretation of that person.
• Create a dominant impression of the subject.
• Make sure your paper has an introduction, body and conclusion.
o Introduction: present your significant figure and theme(s).
o Body: include an analysis that incorporates concepts, ideas and theories to explain
your theme and the person’s ideology.

concepts, ideas and theories.
