Module 7 - Discussion

Part 1  Exploring a framework for monitoring global sustainable development

By Monday of Week 8, Choose one Sustainable Development Goal (Links to an external site.) to focus on.  Select one target and two indicators within that target for this exercise.  An example is provided below:

Goal 3:  Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

Target 3.1:  By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births

Indicators:

3.1.1 Maternal mortality ratio

3.1.2 Proportion of births attended by skilled health personnel

For each of your chosen indicators:

  1. After reading through the Overview and Progress and Info tabs, explain why you think the indicator was chosen to monitor progress toward the target.
  2. Share information or data provided about the indicators and target (also in the Overview and Progress and Info tabs).  How far from or close to the targets are we at the present time?
  3. Explain if and why you believe this indicator is the appropriate choice to monitor progress toward the target and larger goal.  Use the the information about characteristics of effective indicators from the readings to support your position.

Part 2 Connecting the SDGs to local issues

Next, think about a sustainability issue in your community that you would like to address. It be could related to the issue that you've researched for the Community Engagement Requirement or it could be completely separate, such as air quality, water quality (e.g. lake, river), an endangered species, a community health issue (children's asthma, obesity), loss of local businesses, systemic inequality, etc.

  1. Briefly explain the sustainability issue you have identified
  2. Identify which Sustainable Development Goal (Links to an external site.) is connected to this sustainability issue most closely and explain the connection

Include citations from the week's materials in your posts.
